About the city

Altamonte Springs is a forward-thinking city, recognized for its innovative projects and commitment to fiscal responsibility.

In early 2024, the City launched the Altamonte Global Innovation Lab (AGĪL), a hub for smart technologies and advanced mobility solutions. With nearly 94 million vehicles passing through Altamonte Springs annually, the City recognized the need for an efficient, real-time traffic management system and sought to explore opportunities through AGĪL.

The partnership

The City of Altamonte Springs was the first local government in the State of Florida to enter into an innovation partnership with Causeway one.network.

The primary goal of this partnership was to deploy and assess an advanced traffic management platform that could provide real-time updates on road conditions, improve public safety, and facilitate better coordination between the City departments and external stakeholders.

Benefits and key outcomes

Pilot Timeline

Pilot Outcomes

During the initial pilot, the City successfully:

  • Planned and published 48 road closures
  • Ensured 100% of closures were confirmed and published by navigation providers
  • Achieved 99% of closures being reported within 5 minutes of start time

“The City of Altamonte Springs is dedicated to embracing innovative partners that can be a catalyst for sustainable and safer communities and that can help our government be as efficient as possible and create the safest environment for our employees and for travelers.”

– Frank Martz, City Manager, City of Altamonte Springs

Ongoing Benefits

✅ Dynamic Interactive Mapping

A live map on the City’s website provides real-time updates on road closures, which works to alleviate traffic congestion, guide drivers safely around work zones, and offers a transparent view of our streets and ongoing closures.

✅ Enhanced Public Safety Collaboration

The Altamonte Springs Police Department actively engages with the software for emergency management and safety planning, allowing officers the ability to notify the public through navigation application providers, informing them of a closure within minutes of arriving on site.

✅ Efficient Interdepartmental Coordination

Fosters efficient communication across all City departments, enabling staff to add and access information seamlessly.

✅ Integration with Major Navigation Platforms

Real-time updates are shared directly with navigation providers such as Google Maps and Waze, ensuring accurate and timely information to the traveling public.

✅ Accurate Oversight

The City gains a precise, real-time perspective of both planned and active closures, creating a
single, reliable record that enhances traffic management and supports the generation of detailed reports for strategic decision-making.

Lessons Learned

Geofencing Limitations
The geofence requirement was modified to improve usability for City employees while maintaining security.

Training Requirements
The need for proactive identification of training requirements was highlighted, leading to the development of a Standard Operating Procedure.

Equipment Challenges
Many field employees lacked access to City-provided devices for documenting and activating closures in the platform. The City enabled department supervisors to add closures via the web portal, and is considering the purchase of dedicated equipment for field use.

Future Plans

The partnership between Altamonte Springs and Causeway one.network has demonstrated how local governments can embrace innovation to improve public safety and traffic management. Moving forward, the City plans to expand its innovation initiatives, using the success of this project as a model for future partnerships.

With this groundwork laid, Altamonte Springs is well positioned to continue leading the way in municipal
innovation, seeing an example for other cities across the United States.
