Managing traffic disruptions with the whole world watching

“Without one.network, it would have been days of no sleep, constant worry and who knows how many phone calls from the public. This saved me and our teams literally hundreds of hours.”

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their wedding would take place at Windsor Castle, it set off a massive planning effort with one.network‘s Live Map and Traffic Management tool at the center.

Windsor is a historic but congested small town with limited parking and narrow roads that have occupied the same footprint for centuries.

The wedding would swell Windsor’s daily population from 33,000 to more than 115,000.

Add in a royal carriage procession, security planning, changing weather and the need to be able to evacuate everyone in case of an incident, and the course was set for a massive traffic management operation that had to be flawless.

one.network Saves Time…and Stress

Agnieszka (Aggie) Fedyna, who is primarily responsible for traffic management in Windsor, immediately put one.network’s solution into action.

She developed a dynamic, real-time map that incorporated traffic routing and lane closure plans from police, medical, emergency providers, and palace protection services.

In just three hours using one.network’s platform, Aggie built the extremely detailed, yet simple to read map highlighting every road-closure, detour and traffic intervention, a process that would have taken her an entire week using the previous traffic management systems.

Months before the event, she and her team were able to share the one.network Royal Wedding traffic map with the public, media, transit providers and even the Royal Household.

That map immediately became the primary communications tool to notify all stakeholders about fixed and changing traffic patterns before, during and after the royal wedding.

“When you put information in writing, people can’t comprehend it. Until you navigate such a massive event, you don’t realize how much a visual tool actually helps. Once you have the public informed, you have them on your side.”

– Agnieska Fedyna, Senior Network and Traffic Coordinator, Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead

Measuring impact: how one.network helped

  • Saved approximately 2,000 worker hours over the course of the year.
  • Dramatically increased media, transit providers, resident and public awareness for three months leading up to the wedding.
  • Reduced inquiry and complaint calls by approximately 75%, saving hundreds of traffic personnel hours.
  • Created a dynamic map that could be easily modified by smartphone, with changes delivered immediately to stakeholders, media and the public.
  • Automatically pushed data to GPS traffic map services (Google, Waze, etc.)
  • Allowed local businesses to plan for the event, including nearby Legoland Windsor Resort, which maintained normal driving access for both customers and employees.
  • Allowed 800 VIPs access to Windsor Castle on the day of the event.
  • Let traffic managers create and maintain both a public-facing plan and a private, secure plan with emergency options.

“Anyone who is not using one.network is wasting their own resources. It’s the perfect tool.”

– Agnieska Fedyna, Senior Network and Traffic Coordinator, Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead

Changing Traffic Information on a Dime (Or Ten Pence)

Good weather predictions for Harry and Meghan’s wedding increased attendance predictions.

With just hours to go, Aggie modified the map from her cell phone to begin all traffic interventions at 4 a.m. rather than 8 a.m. as previously planned.

The result?

“There were literally no backups. It was one of the smoothest days you can think of.”

– Agnieska Fedyna, Senior Network and Traffic Coordinator, Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead
